Thailand’s Textile and Silk Hub

Thailand's textile sector is a vibrant and essential component of the nation's economy, merging historical artistry with contemporary advancements. Thailand maintains a vital position in the global textile and apparel market through its strong emphasis on sustainability, a wide variety of textiles, and considerable export capabilities.

Over the last fifty years, Thailand's textile sector has developed considerably, establishing itself as one of the top textile manufacturers globally. Thailand holds the position of the 9th largest producer of polyester and the 5th largest producer of acrylics worldwide, making it a significant player in the global synthetic fiber industry. Furthermore, Thailand is the seventh biggest exporter of silk in Asia.

The Northeastern region of Thailand, locally known as “ISAN” is considered to be the major silk hub of the country, accounting for around 97% of the country's raw silk production. This is primarily due to the region's ideal climate for growing mulberries, which are essential for silkworms. The area is also especially known for its traditional silk weaving methods, notably the elaborate mudmee (tie-dye) patterns and brocaded designs, which are central to Isan's cultural identity.

With Khon Kaen’s well-developed transportation infrastructure, strategic location, and business-friendly environment, the city provides the ideal backdrop in the Greater Mekong Subregion for showcasing silk craftsmanship, facilitating trade relations, and fueling innovation and sustainability.

From ISAN Silk & Craft Trade 2024 to ISAN Silk & Textile Expo 2025

Building on the success of the ISAN Silk & Craft Trade 2024 (ISCT 2024), which marked a pivotal moment for the silk and textile industry in Northeast Thailand, the upcoming ISAN Silk & Textile Expo 2025 will expand that momentum into a full-scale international platform.

ISCT 2024 laid the foundation by connecting local producers with global buyers and showcasing innovation in silk, craft, and textile design. In response to overwhelming interest and long-term strategic goals, ISAN Silk & Textile Expo 2025 will take place in 3-4 December 2025, positioning Isan as a regional hub for silk innovation, sustainable fashion, and cultural soft power.
